Community UMC will join other United Methodist Church congregations in celebration of One Great Hour of Sharing on March 14th and 15th. Through One Great Hour of Sharing offerings, United Methodist congregations fund the operations cost of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), allowing the organization to utilize 100% of specified contributions for the designated projects.

UMCOR is the denomination’s designated disaster-relief agency, providing humanitarian relief in response to conflict and natural disasters, as well as emergency preparedness training. UMCOR is also involved in global development work, such as health, water and sanitation, and food security. CUMC’s recent confirmation class project, Imagine No Malaria, is an UMCOR program. UMCOR works in the United States and in more than 80 other countries to assist people regardless of race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation.

2015 marks 75 years of UMCOR’s ministry. The Methodist Committee for Overseas Relief (MCOR) was created at the 1940 General Conference in response to a report by the Methodist Committee for China Relief. Bishop Herbert Welch described MCOR by stating, “Our motto is ‘Giving by Christians for the needy, without distinction for race, creed, or color.’ We bear witness to Christ by serving all in the name of Christ.” In 1968, MCOR merged with the Evangelical United Brethren relief and disaster ministries to become the United Methodist Committee on Overseas Relief (UMCOR). In 1972, the disaster relief work within the United States was incorporated into UMCOR, which resulted in its renaming to the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Learn more about UMCOR by visiting
