Hunger in America affects 1 in 7 people. 

In 2024 the World Health Organization highlighted hunger as a global crisis, with three consecutive years of increased hunger numbers globally.

The Hunger Team at CUMC works together on multiple projects a year to combat food scarcity and food insecurity in our community and in our world. Anyone is welcome to join and all projects are open to volunteers.

Bag Lunch Program

The church office has bag lunches that are given to anyone who asks for assistance during the day. Lunches are packed and provided by the team.

CROP Walk

Each October a team of walkers from CUMC participates in the Naperville area CROP walk and raises funds to support this organization.

Drive-Through Food Drives

Each quarter CUMC is a collection site for donations for Loaves and Fishes, our local food pantry. Volunteers unload cars of donations, organize and box them and then deliver them to Loaves and Fishes for distribution locally. Drives usually occur on the last Sunday of the month in January, April, July, and October from 12pm – 2pm. 

EveryDay Mission Bags

Bags with shelf-stable food and drink items are available for church members to take and distribute as they go about their daily activities. Any time they encounter someone in need they can show someone Community cares. Bags are packed at a variety of church events and the supplies are purchased with Hunger Team funds.

Feed My Starving Children

Several times a year, groups sign up to go to our local site and help pack food to send globally. The Hunger Team also donates to this organization from our funds.

Heifer Project

Each December we have a drive to “Fill the Ark.” Donated funds are used by Heifer International to purchase local animals in areas of need and to train families in the care and raising of the animals. This provides a source of food and/or income for these families and improves lives and communities long-term. 

Hesed House

Funds from the Hunger Team are used to purchase dinner quarterly in coordination with our Mission Committee that organizes a group to serve the meals.

Seed Drive

Each spring, the Hunger Team sponsors a seed drive. Packs of vegetable and flower seeds are donated and then distributed to multiple groups. In the past seeds have gone to the Chicago Housing Authority’s Senior gardens, Hesed House, Loaves & Fishes and CUMC Youth Group mission trips.

Souper Bowl Sunday

Cans of soup are collected on Super Bowl Sunday. Cans are used to vote for a favorite team to win. All cans are donated to Loaves & Fishes.
